State of the Broadband Nation 2004

The Broadband Industry Group has launched a report on the state of competition in the broadband market in the UK at the end of 2004. The report provides an assessment of regulatory and market activity over the past twelve months and the level of progress made towards the achievement of a competitive broadband market.

The main findings include:
  • There has yet to be a real breakthrough in the achievement of genuine wholesale broadband competition and at the end of 2004 BT's position in the market remains similar to that of a year ago and it continues to hold over 90% of the non-cable wholesale broadband market.
  • Ofcom's focus on improving the regulatory rules that govern the wholesale market have been positive but BT's competitors are still facing price and process issues that continue to act as barriers to competition.
  • The report sets out a number of key steps that need to be taken in order to achieve a genuinely competitive wholesale broadband market in the UK. In particular it is important that the Strategic Review of Telecommunications delivers true equality of access and a level playing field capable of sustaining long-term competition.
