What is the Broadband Industry Group?

Background and Composition
The Broadband Industry Group has formed to campaign for greater competition in the UK broadband market and to realise the economic potential of broadband for the UK. Comprised of companies drawn from across the communications industry, the Group's members share a common determination to play a role in the development of broadband services in the UK.

Beliefs
The Broadband Industry Group believes that broadband is an important source of economic growth for the UK which will only be unleashed by the creation of a genuinely competitive market. Research commissioned by the Group and conducted by the centre for economic and business research (cebr) found that with a competitive market, broadband would deliver the following benefits to the UK:

  • UK productivity will rise by 2.5% by 2015
  • With faster economic growth, UK GDP will be £22 billion higher by 2015

    Objectives
    The Group will campaign for more effective regulation of competition in broadband markets with the following five objectives:

  • Fair pricing for wholesale DSL and LLU broadband services
  • Better processes and carrier quality terms and conditions for wholesale DSL and LLU broadband services
  • Simultaneous launch of retail and wholesale broadband services G
  • reater certainty and transparency in relation to wholesale broadband services
  • Level competitive playing field for all broadband service providers
